The former engineer claimed that the company discriminated against her both because of her age and her Iranian descent. Stahl worked for Cisco for a period of 20 years and was fired after experiencing significant discrimination in the workplace. According to Stahl, she was excluded from meetings and treated contemptuously by her two superiors. She filed a lawsuit with Santa Clara County Superior Court against both superiors who are 10 years her junior. The grounds of the lawsuit were that the younger superiors created a hostile work environment that had negative effects on her health and made it necessary for her to take a leave of absence. According to her lawyers, Stahl was promoted multiple times and received strong performance views during her long period of service to the company. In 2013, she was working on a cloud-based security project that fell under new management. The senior director in charge reportedly refused to acknowledge her presence, respond to her greetings, and spoke to her in a hostile tone. In March 2014, Stahl received a poor performance view from her supervisor along with an age-related comment about her period of employment. In her official complaint, Stahl states that her supervisor told her she “must be tired” and said, “Twenty years is too long – aren’t you done?” These comments contributed to the hostile work environment Stahl experienced, but the discrimination extended to job-related practicalities. Stahl’s two supervisors would reportedly exclude her from brainstorming sessions, social events, and ignore her emails. One supervisor placed her on a performance-improvement plan and gave her a performance review that rated her in the bottom five percent of her team. When Stahl contacted the Cisco Systems human resources department, she was told that her complaint of discrimination was unfounded. Under the California Family Rights Act, Stahl was able to take a leave of absence in July. She claims that the hostile work environment led to strain on her health. While she was taking leave, she was fired from the company. Stahl contacted Cisco’s human resources department, which determined her complaint of discrimination was unfounded.
